At what age should children be required to attend school here in Pennsylvania?
Proposals calling for changes to the state’s compulsory school age law received mixed reviews during a hearing before the House Education Committee.
Pennsylvania State Education Association President Rich Askey says PSEA supports Governor Wolf’s proposal to lower the compulsory age for starting school from 8 to 6.
“This change reflects national policy, and aligns our statute with what is already common practice for most people in Pennsylvania,” Askey said.
But, Angela Davis of the Christian Home School Association of Pennsylvania says home schoolers oppose the proposal because it places unnecessary burdens on them and would increase the tax burden for all PA families.
Another proposal would eliminate the ability of a 17-year-old to drop out of school without the permission of a parent or guardian.
