Many people have the day off for Presidents’ Day, but a local group is inviting people to commemorate the birthday of our first president this weekend.
The annual Cherry Pike Hike commemorating George Washington will be on Saturday, Feb. 23 beginning at Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock.
Visitors can choose from several hikes and walks, and meet circa-1753 re-enactors portraying Washington and his guide Christopher Gist, as well as the Native Americans the two encountered. Echoing through the woods that day will be the reenactment of the gunshot that could have ended Washington’s life when he was just 21.
Cherry pie will then be served to honor Washington’s birthday.
You can register for the event online. Visit www.events.dcner.pa.gov and search “Cherry Pie.”
