The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization wants to hold a program in two Butler Area schools this fall.
Members of the School Board Education Committee heard about a school-based mentoring program that the group would like to get started at Emily Brittain Elementary and Butler Middle Schools.
The organization would like to train 10 to 12 students from either Butler County Community College, Slippery Rock University, or Butler High School for each building. All older students participating in the program would undergo the same background checks as anyone working with kids in the district.
Those students would then be paired up with younger students identified by the district to meet once a week. The pairs would work on social development, games, group activities and study skills.
If high school students are chosen for the program, the possibility exists for them to get credit for their participation. There would be no cost for younger kids to participate but permission would need to be given by parents or guardians. If successful, the program could be expanded in the future.
