Police are investigating an incident of fraud that occurred in Mercer County this past weekend.
According to State Police, shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Friday (6/19), someone called the home of an 84-year-old woman on Patton Road in Sandy Lake Township claiming to be her grandson.
The caller knew details about the woman and her grandson and claimed to be in jail as a result of a car accident. The caller then asked for $1,400 to get out of jail and take care of injuries. A second individual then came on the line to confirm the story.
The woman used Western Union to wire the money to the caller before actually speaking with her grandson later that night and learning that he had not been in an accident or jail.
State Police are continuing their investigation and anticipate bringing charges of theft, fraud and forgery against those responsible.
