State police in neighboring Mercer County are warning people about a scam that cost a woman thousands of dollars.
The 86-year-old victim received a call from someone saying they were an attorney and claiming the victim’s grandson was in jail because he was in a car accident.
The caller convinced the woman to buy several thousand dollars worth of Apple iTunes cards and provide him with the card numbers when he called back.
The victim did just that. Police say the victim was able to freeze several of the cards after she realized that it was a scam.
State police say this is a common scam and usually victimizes the elderly.
Troopers say you should consult with family or contact the police if you receive such a call in the future.
