A Forward Township man shot by police after officers say he walked out of his home with a gun and pointed it at troopers, has died.
Police were initially called to 73-year-old Walter Wiemann’s home on Nursery Road- near Reibold Road in Renfrew- just before noon Tuesday.
The incident initially came in as a mental health call, according to police.
“Troopers immediately responded to the scene. It was soon decided to bring in a special response team because the individual posed a risk to himself, the community and officers,” Trooper Dan Kesten said during a news conference on Tuesday.
State police say they tried to talk to Wiemann several times, but he didn’t cooperate.
“We couldn’t get through to him,” Kesten said.
The standoff lasted for hours and ended when Wiemann allegedly came outside and pointed a rifle at troopers.
“When troopers pulled into the driver, the man lifted his rifle and pointed it into the direction of the troopers. At that point, a trooper responded by firing at the individual. The individual was struck,” he said.
Wiemann was initially flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh for medical treatment but later died.
Police say it’s still unclear what sparked the standoff. An investigation continues.
