State Police in Butler charged an Ohio man Tuesday with several offenses after they say he used a made up address to get a driver’s license.
He then allegedly used that license to obtain several other fraudulent documents.
Shawn Smith, 52, of Washingtonville, Ohio, was arraigned by a Butler County district judge on charges including two counts of tampering with public records or information.
Police say Smith is a resident of Ohio and has a suspension on his Ohio driver’s license for warrants. He is accused of using an address of 419 South Main Street in Fredonia to obtain a Pennsylvania driver’s license back in 2009, according to court documents.
“He then renewed a commercial driver’s license seven times since 2009 using that address,” according to a criminal complaint filed by police.
Police allege Smith also used his fake driver’s license as documentation to secure five medical examiner’s certificates. He also allegedly crafted a fake lease that stated he was being rented land on 419 S. Main Street in Fredonia by Stan and Mary Bright of Fredonia, which police believe are fictitious people. Smith also allegedly had an insurance policy under the fake address.
A State Police officer visited the fake Fredonia address and verified it did not exist.
“The closest place to this address is a large farm field,” according to court documents.
