Two people are facing charges after police say they were high on heroin when they crashed their vehicle in Lancaster Township…and their 1-year-old child was in the backseat.
The crash happened on Wednesday evening on Interstate 79 southbound.
According to State Police in Butler, 22-year-old Emily Shontz of Rochester, Pa. was behind the wheel when her passenger, 34-year-old Nathan McKee (also of Rochester, Pa.), overdosed on heroin.
Shontz attempted to wake up McKee, but ended up driving off the road and crashing into the median.
When police arrived, they determined Shontz was also under the influence of heroin.
The couple’s 1-year-old son was in the backseat. He was reportedly not injured.
Both were charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Shontz also faces DUI and other traffic-related charges.
