Plans are underway to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport later this year.
The airport was dedicated and opened in late September 1929. Officials say it was established as the primary airport for the Pittsburgh area, and it remained the region’s aviation hub until the construction of the Pittsburgh International Airport in the 1950s.
The airport is currently operated and managed by the Butler County Airport Authority board of directors, and hosts and supports roughly 75,000 aircraft operations each year. That’s an average of over 200 operations per day.
It’s home to 150 pieces of aircraft, including 11 jets.
The airport plans to begin an awareness campaign this year to call attention to the history of the property.
The airport is located off Route 8 in Penn Township.
