Another blown save for Pittsburgh Pirate closer Mark Melancon, but for the third time this season, the Pirates still won a game Melancon couldn’t finish. Josh Harrison hit a triple in the bottom of the ninth, then scored on a throwing error as he slid into third base to give the Pirates a 3-2 victory over Milwaukee last night at PNC Park. It was the second consecutive blown save for Melancon. He allowed a game-tying home run in the ninth inning Sunday, but the Pirates won that game in 18-innings. Jameson Taillon started the game after a stint on the disabled list and pitched six-innings of one-run baseball. He survived a scary moment in the second inning when a batted ball struck him in the back of the head, but remained in the game.
The Bucs and Brewers meet again tonight at 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. Jeff Locke will start for the Pirates.
The Pirates moved to within eight games of the Chicago Cubs who lost to the New York Mets 2-1 last night.
Catcher Francisco Cervelli returned from the disabled list last night, and outfielder Gregory Polanco also returned to the line-up after missing just over a week with a leg injury. The Pirates designated Erik Kratz for assignment and sent pitcher Chad Kuhl back to Triple-A Indianapolis yesterday. Kuhl pitched six shut-out innings Sunday in Washington.
