Pirates
Gerrit Cole didn’t allow a hit until the fifth, held the Cardinals scoreless over seven, and added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh as the Pirates, beat the Cardinals 7-1 Sunday.
The Bucs are now 5 ½ games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central and are in Cincinnati today at 1:10.
Jeff Locke, will pitch today’s opener of a three-game series.
A.J. Burnett could return as early as this week after throwing a bullpen session Sunday at Busch Stadium.
The Pirates determined his next step after a meeting Sunday with Burnett, manager Clint Hurdle and general manager Neal Huntington, but they declined to make it public.
Bullpen sessions or simulated games generally don’t impact rotations, so it appears Burnett will return to the majors. He has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 31 because of a flexor strain in his right elbow. He pitched six innings in a simulated game Friday before his bullpen session Sunday.
Steelers
The Steelers placed injured center Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve/designated to return list and signed veteran guard/center Doug Legursky to take his place on the roster.
Pouncey fractured his left fibula in the third preseason game against the Packers and had surgery to repair the injury. He is eligible to return in Week 9 against the Raiders.
The Steelers signed Legursky two days after Pouncey was injured . He was released on Saturday during the final cut-down, but he was back with his teammates this afternoon for an afternoon meeting.
Legursky gives the Steelers another veteran center behind starter Cody Wallace.
