The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Washington Nationals 2-1 in 18-innings Sunday. The lengthy victory helped the Pirates avoid a sweep. Jon Niese won the game in relief with three shut-out innings. Starling Marte hit a game-winning home run in the top of the 18th. Mark Melancon allowed a game-tying home run in the ninth on a two-strike, two-out pitch. Starter Chad Kuhl allowed just an opening-inning single and threw six shut-out innings.
The Pirates are off today and begin a three-game series with Milwaukee Tuesday. Jameson Taillon will come off the disabled list to start that game.
