The Pittsburgh Pirates won their third straight game over the Los Angeles Dodgers swith a 4-3 victory last night at PNC Park. Rookie Chad Kuhl outpitched Clayton Kershaw to earn his first major league victory. Kuhl went five innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out five in his major league debut. The Pirates had nine hits off Kershaw, who allowed four earned runs in a game for just the second time all season.
Kuhl made the start in place of Gerrit Cole who remains on the disabled list.
The Pirates and Dodgers wrap up their four-game series this afternoon at PNC Park. Game time is 12:35pm. Francisco Liriano will start for the Pirates. Scott Kazmir will start for the Dodgers. The Pirates head to Seattle following the game to begin a 10-game road trip. They are currently 37-39 overall, four games out of a Wild Card and 12 behind the first-place Chicago Cubs.
Gregory Polanco missed his third game in a row with a leg injury. He did make a pinch-hit appearance last night. Shortstop Jordy Mercer left the game last night after a collision with Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley on a double-play attempt.
Pitcher Cory Luebke passed through waivers and has refused his assignment to Indianapolis. He becomes a free agent. Luebke appeared in nine games for the Pirates, and had a 9.35 ERA.
