The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 Monday for their fifth win in a row. Gregory Polanco had thehis first multi-home run game of his career. Starting pitcher Jon Niese allowed just one run over 5-2/3rds innings for the win. Although he would give up a run in his appearance, Juan Nicasio struck out the side on nine pitches in the eighth inning of last night’s game. He is the third Pirate to ever throw what is considered an “immaculate inning”. The others are Ross Ohlendorf in 2009, and Jeff Robinson in 1987.
The Pirates have been dealth another injury to their pitching staff. The Bucs have placed rookie Jameson Taillon on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue. He had a terrific start in Seattle, allowing just one run over six innings, but also just returned this season for the first time since Tommy John surgery. Left-hander Steven Brault will make his major league debut tonight against the Cardinals in place of Taillon. Game time is 8:09pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 7:45pm. Brault is 2-3 overall with a 2.57 ERA in eight starts with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Gerrit Cole will make a rehab start tonight in place of Brault for Indianapolis.
