The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Sunday and took two of three games from the Dodgers who lead the National League Western Division. Pirate starting pitcher Gerrit Cole won his 17th game of the season, allowing three runs on six hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine. Mark Melancon picked up his 48th save of the season. Starling Marte and Pedro Alvarez hit home runs for the Bucs.
The Pirates magic number to clinch a playoff spot was reduced to three with the victory. The Bucs remain four games behind the first place St. Louis Cardinals in the N.L. Central Division. The Cards defeated the Chicago Cubs Sunday 4-3, so the Pirates are now two games in front of the Cubs for the top Wild Card spot. The Pirates move on to Colorado and begin a four game series with the Rockies tonight. The Pirates will be in Chicago to face the Cubs for three games this weekend. A.J. Burnett will start tonight’s game that begins at 8:40pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 8:15pm.
