The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cleveland Indians 5-3 Sunday at PNC Park. The Pirates had a five-run fifth inning to take the game over, led by a Pedro Alvarez two-run home run. Gerrit Cole picked up his 12th win of the season, allowing three earned runs over eight innings. Mark Melancon earned his 27th save.
The Bucs took two of three games in the series, and now host San Diego for three games beginning tonight. First pitch is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. The Pirates are 47-34 overall, and remain six games behind first-place St. Louis, who took two of three games from San Diego over the weekend. The Cards open a series with the Cubs in Chicago tonight. They play four games in Pittsburgh beginning Thursday.
The Major League Baseball All-Star starters were announced Sunday night. Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals set a fan-voting record for the National League. Josh Donaldson of the Toronto Blue Jays led the American League vote. No Pirates were voted as starters, although it appears Andrew McCutchen, who was fifth in the voting of National League outfielders, could start because of injuries. The rest of the All-Star roster will be announced today.
