The Pittsburgh Pirates were swept by the Seattle Mariners following a 6-5 loss in 11-innings. Reliever Clay Holmes allowed the game-winning run in the 11th. Joe Musgrove started for the Bucs, and allowed four runs, two earned in five innings. He walked two and struck out six.
Kevin Newman had two hits in the game, and is now tied with fellow rookie Bryan Reynolds. Both are batting .317 this season. Newcomer Jake Elmore had three hits and drove in two runs.
The Pirates visit the Milwaukee Brewers to begin a three-game series tonight. First pitch is 8:10pm. Steven Brault will start for the Pirates.
The Bucs and Brewers play tomorrow night at 7:10pm. Pre-game on WISR is 6:45pm. The Bucs and Brewers complete their series Sunday at 2:10pm.
The Pirates will have Monday off – then host the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds to complete their season next week.
The Cubs were defeated by St. Louis 5-4 in 10-innings last night in the opening game of a four-game series at Wrigley Field. Milwaukee defeated San Diego 5-1, so the Brewers have taken over the final Wild Card spot by one game over the Cubs. The teams have nine games remaining.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo made a surprise start last night, being inserted into the lineup 20 minutes prior to game time – and hit a home run. Rizzo sprained an ankle on Sunday, and was expected to miss the remainder of the regular season.
The Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 last night and have clinched at least a tie for the National League East.
The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 9-1 last night and have clinched the American League East. They join the Houston Astros with 100 wins this season. The Astros have clinched a playoff spot, and could clinch the A.L. West this weekend.
