The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a four-game series sweep of the Colorado Rockies following a come-from-behind 5-4 victory Thursday. It was their 42nd comeback win of the year. Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning that gave the Pirates the win. It was his 26th home run of the season. Starling Marte had another four hits and ended the series with 13 hits overall, tying a Pirate four-game series record set by Hall-of-Famer Pie Traynor. The Pirates scored 33 runs in the series, but Andrew McCutchen did not drive in a single run. He was walked a franchise-tying nine times in the series.
The Pirates have now won six games in a row. The victory gave the Pirates organization 10,000 wins, one of five teams in Major League Baseball to reach that mark, joining the Giants, Cubs, Braves and Dodgers.
The Bucs visit Chicago for their final road games of the regular season. Gerrit Cole will pitch in today’s game that begins at 2:20pm. Hear the game on WISR 680am beginning at 1:55pm. Jon Lester will start for Chicago. Saturday’s game has been set for a 1:05pm first pitch. Sunday’s game will be nationally televised and will begin at 8:08pm.
The Cubs are 3-1/2 games behind the Pirates for the top Wild Card position in the National League. The Bucs remain four games behind St. Louis in the Central Division. Nine games remain in the season.
A limited amount of post-season tickets will go on sale at the Pirates box office Monday.
The Kansas City Royals became the first team to clinch a division Thursday. The Royals are tied with the Chicago Cubs for the third-best record in baseball, but lead the Minnesota Twins by 11 games.
