The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 Sunday at Miller Park to complete the first-ever four-game series sweep in that town in team history. Gregory Polanco, John Jaso and Starling Marte hit solo home runs in the win. For Polanco, it was his 20th of the season. Ivan Nova earned his fourth win as a Pirate, allowing three hits and a run over six innings. Tony Watson picked up his 10th save.
The victory also moved the Pirates to within a half game of St. Louis for the final National League Wild Card spot. The Bucs visit the Chicago Cubs tonight at 8:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 7:40pm.
Pirate starting pitcher Gerrit Cole is in Los Angeles to have an evaluation on his right elbow. He felt discomfort following his last start. Left-hander Steven Brault will take Cole’s spot in the rotation tonight. Jake Arrieta will start for the Cubs.
The Pirates have also called up pitcher A.J. Schugel from Indianapolis. They sent Adam Frazier to Single-A Bristol, because their season ends Friday and the team can bring him back by this weekend.
New York defeated South Korea 2-1 Sunday to capture the Little League World Series championship in Williamsport. It was the first victory for the United States in five years, and first for team from New York since 1964.
