The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 6-5 victory Wednesday. Andrew McCutchen hit his 17th home run of the season, capping off a six-run fifth inning which decided the game. Matt Joyce, who has been one of the best hitters off the bench in the major league’s this season, had a pinch-hit two-run single prior to the McCutchen home run. Pirate starter Ivan Nova allowed four runs over the first four innings before the Pirates comeback. Juan Nicasio picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings. He now has a record of 9-6. Tony Watson allowed a run in the ninth, but still picked up his seventh save of the season.
The Pirates remain a game behind St. Louis for the final National League Wild Card. They are now three games behind the Giants, who have the first N.L. Wild Card. The Bucs have the day off today, then host the Miami Marlins this weekend at PNC Park.
The Prospect League announced their post-season awards Wednesday. One Butler BlueSox player was named to the league’s post-season All-Star team. Outfielder Will Schneider received the honor. League Champion West Virginia lead the Eastern Division with three players.
