The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a 4-1 decision in the four-game series opener with the St. Louis Cardinals last night at PNC Park. A Jordy Mercer error in the fifth inning led to all for Cardinals runs. Andrew McCutchen hit his 11th home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pirate starter Jeff Locke took the loss, allowing one earned run in five innings. The Bucs went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The game featured another half-hour rain delay.
The Bucs and Cards meet again tonight at PNC Park. Game time is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am will be 6:40pm. Gerrit Cole will start for the Bucs. Cole leads the majors with a 12-3 record. Over his past nine starts, Cole is 7-1 with 2.19 ERA, but is 1-2 with a 3.42 ERA against St. Louis. Lance Lynn will start for the Cardinals.
