The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds split a Memorial Day doubleheader. The Pirates won game one 8-5 with outfielder Bryan Reynolds hitting an eighth inning triple and put the Bucs in the lead for good. The opening game victory snapped a three-game losing streak. Kyle Crick won the game in relief of starter Nick Kingham. Felipe Vazquez earned his 14th save in 14 attempts.
Kingham allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 4-2/3rds innings. Josh Bell hit his 17th home run of the season. Startling Marte hit his sixth.
In game two, the Reds won 8-1. Pirates prospect Mitch Keller made his major league debut. Keller allowed six runs in the first inning, including a grand slam to infielder Jose Iglesias. After that inning, Keller retired nine of the next 10 batter, striking out seven.
The Pirates and Reds play again tonight at 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm. Jordan Lyles will start for the Pirates.
The Pirates are now 26-26 and four behind the Chicago Cubs in the N.L. Central. The Bucs are tied with St. Louis.
