The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 12-0 Labor Day Monday at PNC Park. The Pirates were led by rookies Josh Bell and Max Moroff, who both went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI’s. Bell’s home run was his 24th, which breaks the National League record for a switch-hitting rookie, previously set by Atlanta’s Chipper Jones. Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl went seven innings, allowing just four hits. He walked two and struck out eight for his seventh win of the season. Kuhl has a 3.01 ERA since July 1st.
The Bucs and Cubs meet again tonight at 7:05pm. Steven Brault will start tonight for the Pirates, who are skipping Ivan Nova’s spot in the five-man rotation.
The Pirates have lost All-Star second baseman Josh Harrison for the season after he was hit by a pitch and suffered a broken hand over the weekend.
