The Pittsburgh Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and went on to defeat the San Francisco Giants 7-6 in 10-innings last night at PNC Park. The Bucs entered the ninth inning down 6-2, but rallied to tie the score. Reliever David Bednar pitched a scoreless top-of-the-10th, despite inheriting a runner at second based on the MLB extra-inning rule. Nick Gonzales drove in the winning run in the extra frame.
Pirates starting pitcher Martin Perez pitched into the fifth inning of last night’s game. He allowed four runs, but only two were earned. An Oneil Cruz first-inning error led to an early 2-0 deficit. Cruz helped make up for the early mistake with three hits, including a game-tying double in the ninth inning. The batted ball had an exit velocity of 121.5 miles per hour, the hardest in hit ball in the major league’s this season.
The Bucs have won two straight and four of their last five. They host the Giants again tonight at 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm.
The Pirates have revealed their Hall of Fame Class for 2024. Former manager Jim Leyland, catcher Manny Sanguillen and outfielder Barry Bonds will be honored in a pre-game ceremony August 24th.
