The season-opening series did not go well for the Pittsburgh Pirates, despite solid starting pitching. The back end of the bullpen duo of Colin Holderman and David Bednar failed to close out two of the four games in the series. The Pirates were also out-hit in the series. Miami defeated the Pirates 3-2 Sunday afternoon, when Holderman allowed a run in the seventh inning, and Bednar failed to record an out for the second time in the series, allowing a Miami walk-off victory in the ninth inning. Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney allowed one run on four hits over five innings.
Andrew McCutchen hit a solo home run in the second inning. It was his 800th career extra-base hit. Cutch is now four home runs away from tying Roberto Clemente’s career total.
All four of their games in Miami were decided by one run. The Bucs fell 5-4 in 12-innings Saturday night after winning 4-3 Friday. They had lost 5-4 in the season-opener last Thursday.
The Pirates open a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight. First pitch is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:40pm. Carmen Mlodzinski will start for the Bucs.
