The Houston Astros defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 last night at PNC Park. It was the Pirates fourth loss in a row. Jameson Taillon pitched eight strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits. A fifth inning home run decided the game. Taillon walked one and struck out eight. His record fell to 3-3. The Pirates were shut out over seven innings by Houston starter Doug Fister, who allowed just three hits in his outing. Gregory Polanco had two doubles. Rookie Josh Bell also had a double. The Pirates fell 3-1/2 games out of a Wild Card.
The Bucs and Astros play again tonight at 7:05pm. Ivan Nova will start for the Pirates. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm.
Monday, the Pirates signed infielder David Freese to a two-year contract extension, beginning in 2017, with a club option for the 2019 season. The 33-year-old Freese is hitting .276 with 12 home runs, 49 RBIs in 107 games in his first season with the Pirates. The Pirates have now signed three players to multi-year deals since the start of the 2016 regular season, including Gregory Polanco and Francisco Cervelli along with Freese.
