The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs tied at 1-1 in a game that was called due to rain in the sixth inning. Ivan Nova allowed just one run on four hits before the rains came in what might have been his final start for the Pirates. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Josh Bell drove in the Pirates lone run with a sacrifce fly in the third inning.
The game will not be completed, but all stats will count. The Pirates begin their final three-game series of the season tonight in St. Louis. Tyler Glasnow (0-1, 4.91 ERA) will start for the Pirates. Carlos Martinez (15-9, 3.15 ERA) will start for the Cardinals. First pitch is 8:15pm.
The Pirates are shutting down outfielder Starling Marte for the season with back spasms. It is likely Jordy Mercer may sit out the final series as well with a forearm issue.
The Cardinals begin the weekend one game behind San Francisco for the final National League Wild Card. The New York Mets are two games up on the Cardinals for the top Wild Card. The Mets are in Philadelphia this weekend. The Giants are hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Pirate and Cardinals play Saturday at 1:05pm. (WISR Pre-game is 12:40pm). The teams finish the season with a 3:15pm game Sunday.
In the American League: Toronto and Baltimore are tied for the Wild Card positions. Detroit begins the weekend 1-1/2 games back. Seattle is two games out.
The Cleveland at Detroit game last night was rained out, and if it is needed to decide the American League Wild Card, it will be made up Monday.
The Cubs, Dodgers, Washington, Cleveland, Boston and Texas have clinched spots in their divisions.
