A second inning disaster sent the Pittsburgh Pirates crashing to a 10-0 loss during the Chicago Cubs home opener Monday. Shortstop Kevin Newman made three errors in what should have been a 1-2-3 inning for starting pitcher Jameson Taillon. Taillon was later struck in the head with a line drive and did not return for the third inning. He six runs – none of them earned in two innings.
The Cubs also lost starting pitcher Jon Lester, who left in the third inning after feeling a hamstring issue legging out a double in that second inning.
The Bucs and Cubs are off today and resume their three-game series tomorrow night.
