The Minnesota Twins defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 last night. Pirates starting pitcher Jameson Taillon did not allow a hit through the first three innings, but then allowed five hits and three runs in the fourth to the Twins. The loss dropped Taillon’s record to 9-9. David Freese had a three hit night, but the Pirates struck out 12 times in the game. Gregory Polanco struck out in all four of his at-bats.
It was the second loss in a row for the Pirates, who remain eight games behind the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs lost to Milwaukee last night. The Bucs are five back in the Wild Card. (St. Louis won their seventh game in a row last night, and are a game back in the Wild Card.)
The Pirates and Twins complete their short two-game series today at 1:10pm. WISR will join the game following “It’s Your Turn”. Chris Archer will start for the Pirates.
The Pirates completed their trade with Tampa Bay for Archer, but sending former first-round draft pick Shane Baz to the Rays as the “player to be named”. Baz was the 12th overall pick in 2017. The 19-year old was 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA with Class-A Bristol.
Another #1-pick in that deal, Austin Meadows remains at Tampa Bay’s Triple-A team, while Tyler Glasnow has struck out 20 and allowed just three runs in his first 12 innings as a starter for Tampa Bay.
