The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 in 13-innings last night at PNC Park. The game began after an hour-long rain delay, then lasted almost five hours. Brandon Phillips hit a game-winning home run in the top of the 13th inning off Pirate reliever Rob Scahill. Pirate outfielder Andrew McCutchen missed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th by inches, but was left stranded. Pirate starter A.J. Burnett allowed one earned run over six innings, lowering his ERA to 2.01, but lost a win opportunity when Arquimedes Caminero allowed a two-run home run to Reds third baseman Todd Frazier in the seventh inning. The Bucs have fallen to eight games behind St. Louis, who defeated Miami 5-1 last night.
The Pirates host the Atlanta Braves tonight at 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm.
