The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a sweep by the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 3-1 victory last night to complete a three-game series. Francisco Cervelli hit his first home run of the season and accounted for the Pirates only run. Ryan Vogelsong allowed a two-run home run in the first inning which decided the game. The loss, combined with victories by San Francisco and the New York Mets, has dropped the Pirates to 4-1/2 games back in the Wild Card race with 10 games remaining.
The Bucs finished an 11-game road trip 7-4 and begin their final home-stand of the season tonight. They host the Washington Nationals for three games before the Chicago Cubs come in for four games. Game time tonight is 7:05pm. Jameson Taillon will start for the Pirates.
Starling Marte returned to the Pirate line-up last night after missing two weeks due to back spasms, but left the game during his second at-bat.
Jordy Mercer did not play because of soreness in his throwing arm.
The Pirates acquired left-hander Phil Coke from the New York Yankees to add to their bullpen help. It was a cash deal.
