The St. Louis Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning last night to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 in the opening game of a three-game series in St. Louis. Pirate starter Jeff Locke allowed all four earned runs on seven hits over five innings. His record falls to 6-7 this season and his ERA increased to 4.43 overall. Pedro Alvarez hit his 16th home run of the season. Pirate reliever Jared Hughes had a ball deflect off his chin in the eighth inning, but remained in the game. The Pirates fell to six games behind the Cardinals in the N.L. Central. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Bucs. Game two of the series begins at 8:15pm tonight. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 7:50pm.
Gerrit Cole will start for the Pirates tonight. He leads the National League with a 14-5 record and has a 2.39 ERA. Michael Wacha starts for the Cardinals. He is 13-4 with a 2.92 ERA.
