The Pittsburgh Pirates completed the three game sweep against the Oakland A’s yesterday with a 6-3 win.
Francisco Liriano (5-8) picked up the win, his first since the month of May. He wasn’t stellar, but put together a solid 5 innings, allowing three runs with two strikeouts. Liriano also only walked one, which was the first time he didn’t allow multiple walks in a game since April 24.
Between A.J. Schugel, Neftali Feliz, Tony Watson, and Mark Melancon the Pirates bullpen was able to keep the A’s off the board from the 6th inning on. The bullpen has now thrown 32 consecutive scoreless innings.
Rookie Adam Frazier continued his hot streak going 2-4 with a RBI triple and a double. Through 14 major league at bats, Frazier is now hitting .500.
David Freese added some insurance with a two-run home run in the 8th inning to give Melancon a three run lead in the 9th.
The Pirates are back at .500 (41-41) for the first time since June 16. They begin a four game series today with the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch is at 2:15 p.m. and can be heard on WISR 680 AM. Jon Niese (6-6, 5.07 ERA) squares off against Carlos Martinez (7-5, 2.87 ERA).
