The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game series sweep of the New York Mets following an 8-1 victory Sunday. It was the Pirates fourth straight win, and their 13th series sweep of a team this season. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez had four hits in the game and drove in three runs. Pedro Alvarez hit his 18th home run of the season. Pirate starter Jeff Locke did not figure in the decision, but allowed just one earned run while pitching into the sixth inning. He left with the game tied at 1-1. The Pirates went on to score seven runs in seventh and eighth innings.
The Pirates picked up a game on the St. Louis Cardinals, who lost to Miami 6-4 Sunday. The Pirates are now five games back in the National League Central Division. The Bucs open a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. First pitch is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. Gerrit Cole (14-6, 2.39 ERA) will start for the Pirates tonight. Cole has a 1-5 lifetime record in the month of August, but the Pirates have won 15 of their last 18 games at home, and are 14-2 this season against teams from the N.L. West.
