The Pittsburgh Pirates battle for the fifth spot in the rotation is down to two. The Bucs sent right-hander Drew Hutchison to Class Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday, ending his bid, leaving Trevor Williams and Tyler Glasnow. Williams pitched four shut-out innings in relief Wednesday against Philadelphia. He allowed two hits and struck out six. He did not walk a batter. The Pirates lost the game 8-2. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole allowed three solo home runs. It was the final game in Florida this pre-season for the Pirates. They went 19-11-1 down south. They travel today to Canada, and will play their final two exhibition games at Olympic Stadium in Montreal against Toronto Friday and Saturday.
The Pirates released right-handed reliever Jared Hughes Wednesday. Hughes struggled this spring, allowing 15 runs and 16 hits over 9-1/3rd innings.
