The Pittsburgh Pirates blew a 5-0 lead and allowed the Cincinnati Reds nine unanswered runs in a 9-5 defeat last night. It was the opening game of a three-game series in Cincinnati, where the Pirates are now 0-8 this season.
Six home runs were hit in the game, four by the Reds. Yoshi Tsutsugo and Bryan Reynolds hit home runs for the Bucs. It was Tsutsugo’s eighth as a Pirate. It was the 24th home run of the season for Reynolds.
Despite the win, the Reds remain three games behind St. Louis in the race for a National League Wild Card with 11 games remaining.
The two teams play again tonight at 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR is 6:15pm.
Catcher Jacob Stallings was placed on the seven-day concussion list prior to Monday’s game. The Bucs are also shutting down pitcher Bryse Wilson, who has a hamstring injury.
Former Pirate prospect Shane Baz made his major league debut with the Tampa Bay Rays last night, and allowed two hits and two runs over five innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five in his first major league win. Baz began the season in Double-A and rocketed his way through the Rays system to the big leagues. He was part of the Pirates trade in 2018 that sent Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows to Tampa Bay for pitcher Chris Archer. Glasnow was a Cy Young candidate early this season before going down to Tommy John surgery. Meadows has 25 home runs and 100 RBI’s this season.
