The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-8 in 15-innings last night. Pedro Florimon hit a game-winning triple, driving in catcher Francisco Cervelli to end the game, which lasted more than five hours. The Pirates blew an 8-3 lead, and even closer Mark Melancon failed to pick up a save for the first time in 35 games last night. Errors by Jung Ho Kang and Sean Rodriguez allowed two unearned runs in the ninth inning. The poor defense also took away a win from Francisco Liriano who pitched into the eighth inning last night. Joe Blanton earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief. The Pirates had 17 hits in the game, including home runs from Starling Marte and Kang. Cervelli had four hits.
The Bucs and Diamondbacks wrap-up their three-game series tonight at PNC Park. Game time is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am will be 6:40pm.
The Pirates are now five games behind St. Louis again in the N.L. Central after the Cardinals lost to San Francisco 2-0 last night. The Cubs also lost last night. The Pirates are three games better than the Cubs, and are six games ahead of the Giants in the Wild Card race. San Francisco comes to PNC Park for four games beginning tomorrow night.
