The Pittsburgh Pirates reached one-year deals with five players Friday, avoiding arbitration. They signed closer Mark Melancon to a $9.65 million dollar deal, catcher Francisco Cervelli to $3.5 million dollar deal, shortstop Jordy Mercer to a $2.075 million dollar deal and relief pitchers Tony Watson for $3.45 million and Jared Hughes for $2.75 million. Earlier in the week, the club also signed pitcher Jeff Locke. Backup catcher Chris Stewart also reached a two-year deal with the Pirates, pending a physical.
