The Pirates low-A minor league team are a win away from a Southeast League championship after Bradenton defeated the Yankees Tampa minor league team 6-1 Wednesday. Starting pitcher Luis Ortiz pitched six innings of one-run ball while striking out nine. Game 3 of their series is Friday.
The Reds have announced a two-year contract extension for manager David Bell. The Reds are 184-190 under the 49-year old Bell. They are 76-74 this season and 4-1/2 games out of a National League Wild Card spot.
The St. Louis Cardinals extended their lead over the Reds by another half-game Wednesday with a 10-2 victory over Milwaukee. It was the Cardinals 11th straight win.
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1 yesterday and have clinched a third consecutive playoff spot. Austin Meadows hit his 26th home run of the season, and now has 103 RBI’s. The loss dropped the Blue Jays a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the final American League Wild Card.
