The Pittsburgh Pirates made several moves Wednesday. The Bucs signed free agent John Jaso to a two-year contract worth $8 million. Jaso has primarily been a designated hitter and catcher, but the Pirates will move him to first base in order to replace the left-handed bat of Pedro Alvarez. He is a .263 career hitter, but batted .286 last season with Tampa Bay.
They also claimed right-handed pitcher Yoervis Medina off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. The 27-year old Medina has a 3.08 ERA in 146 major league appearances. He had been with Seattle, but was traded to the Cubs for catcher Wellington Castillo last year.
