The Pirates picked up reliever Joe Blanton from the Kansas City Royals for cash late Wednesday night. The Pirates had been seeking to bolster their bullpen prior to Friday’s trade deadline. Blanton became expendable to the Royals after they acquired Johnny Cueto from Cincinnati. The 34-year old Blanton was 2-2 with a 3.89 ERA in 15 apperances for the Royals this season. He also started four games in Kansas City. He pitched 3-2/3rds innings of scoreless relief against the Pirates just over a week ago. The Pirates will make a roster move after Blanton joins them in Cincinnati today.
The Texas Rangers have traded for Philadelphia starting pitcher Cole Hamels. The Milwaukee Brewers had agreed to send outfielder Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets, but apparently the deal fell apart late last night. Gomez is best remembered by Pirate fans for injuring shortstop Jordy Mercer with a slide, and punching former outfielder Travis Snider.
The Pirates top pitching prospect, Tyler Glasnow, has been promoted from Double-A Altoona to Triple-A Indianapolis. The 21-year old righthander, who is 6′ 8” tall, earned the promotion after a dominating performance in July. He posted a 2.40 ERA for the Curve over his past 30 innings, striking out 46 and walking just seven. He is expected to start for Indianapolis Saturday.
