The Pittsburgh Pirates fell to the Boston Red Sox 5-3 in their season opener Monday. Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had one bad inning, allowing all five runs in the fifth inning to take the loss. Red Sox rookie Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run home run in the inning. David Freese led the Pirates with two hits. Josh Bell and Francisco Cervelli each had a double. The Pirates left eight runners on base.
Game two of the series will be tomorrow night at Fenway Park. First pitch is 7:10pm.
