The Karns City girls basketball team won third consecutive District 9 championship Saturday with a 40-23 victory over Moniteau. Leeann Gibson led the Gremlins with 16 points.
WPIAL basketball championships Saturday: Vincentian won their fifth consecutive girls Single-A title with a 68-54 win over Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Norwin won the Quad-A girls championship with a 63-57 victory in overtime over North Allegheny. Norwin is now 25-0 this season. Pine-Richland won the boys Quad-A title 73-50 over North Hills.
Friday, North Catholic boys won the WPIAL Single-A title with a 50-36 win over Sewickley Academy.
The first round of the PIAA basketball tournament will begin this weekend. In Triple-A Boys Friday: Mars will take on Clearfield at Dubois high school. Game time is 7pm. In Single A Boys Friday: WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic will meet Union-Rimersburg. In Quad-A Boys Saturday: WPIAL champion Pine-Richland will meet Bethel Park. Runner-up North Hills will face Latrobe.
Double-A Girls first round Friday: District 9 champion Karns City will face Carlynton at Clarion University. Moniteau will meet Our Lady of Sacred Heart at North Catholic high school. Both tip-offs are 6pm. In Triple-A Girls Saturday: Mars will face Mercyhurst Prep at Gannon University. In Quad-A Girls Friday: Pine-Richland will face Warren. North Allegheny will get Obama Academy. Saturday in Single-A: WPIAL runner-up Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic will meet Cochranton.
In the Southwest Christian Athletic Conference Championships Saturday: the Portersville Christian boys defeated Cheswick Christian 40-28. The First Baptist Christian girls defeated Portersville Christian 24-23.
