Opening round of the PIAA Soccer Playoffs last night:
The Seneca Valley Boys defeated District-6 champion State College 1-0 in double overtime last night in a 4-A game. Matt Happ scored the game-winner for the Raiders who improve to 19-1-1 overall. Seneca Valley advances into the quarterfinals Saturday and will get their fourth match-up of the season with North Allegheny, who ousted Pine-Richland 2-1 in double overtime last night. The Raiders and Tigers are 1-1-1 in their matches this season.
The Mars Boys defeated Hollidaysburg 2-1 in a 3-A first round game. Austin Rocke scored the game-winner with under five minutes remaining in regulation. The Planets will meet Lower Dauphin Saturday in the quarterfinals.
In 2-A: The Karns City Boys defeated Harbor Creek 2-1. The Gremlins will meet WPIAL champion Quaker Valley Saturday in the quarterfinals. It was the Gremlins first state playoff victory in five years. Spenser Myers scored the game-winner for Karns City, who improved to 20-0 this season and are the District-9 champions.
The Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Boys rolled over Iroquois 6-0 last night Joe Kearney scored four goals for the Trojans, who get Seton-LaSalle Saturday.
The Freeport Girls defeated Karns City 2-1 last night in a 2-A first round game. The Yellow Jackets will meet Hickory Saturday. It was the first state playoff win in Freeport school history. The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Brittni Grenninger, a former Karns City player. Her father Jim coaches the Gremlins. Karns City completes their season 18-2.
PIAA Girls Volleyball first round:
Seneca Valley shut-out Exeter Township 3-0 in a 4-A first round match. The Raiders will meet State College Saturday.
Knoch defeated Fort LeBoeuf 3-1 and will face West Allegheny in a 3-A quarterfinal match Saturday.
In 2-A: WPIAL champion Freeport were the only team to fall in the opening round, dropping a 3-1 match to North East last night.
AC Valley had their season ended by Maplewood 3-0.
