The PIAA released enrollment numbers Monday for high schools across Pennsylvania and their classification parameters as they prepare to expand many sports to six classes. The WPIAL will have 13 schools in the top six-A level, including Butler, Seneca Valley, Pine-Richland, North Allegheny and Central Catholic who have participated in football’s Northern Eight Conference in football in recent years. It is expected the WPIAL will come up with its alignment sometime in December.
As for area schools:
Falling into the Five-A class: Armstrong and Mars, Knoch, Franklin and Grove City are Four-A. Karns City, Freeport and Slippery Rock are in the Triple-A classification. Moniteau in Double-A, and in Single-A would be AC Valley and Summit Academy.
The WPIAL and other Districts (9 and 10) will have to meet in December to decide how they will address the new classifications.
