In the midst of the Major League Baseball trade deadline, Jim Rutherford and the Penguins pulled off a trade and a free agent signing when no one was looking.
The Penguins sent center Brandon Sutter to the Vancouver Canucks and signed center Eric Fehr to a two year deal worth $3 million per season.
In the Sutter deal, the Pens acquired center Nick Bonino, defensive prospect Adam Clendenning, and a second round draft pick in 2016. The Canucks also received a third round pick in 2016 from the Pens.
The 27 year-old Bonino scored 15 goals and had 39 points last year. He’s under contract for another two years at $1.9 million per season.
The 22 year-old Clendenning split time last year between the AHL and NHL. He was a second round pick by Chicago in 2011.
The 29 year-old Fehr has a track record as a solid third line center, and was one of the more touted free agents in his position this summer. Last year in Washington, Fehr had 19 goals and 33 points.
