The Pittsburgh Penguins won a wild return to the second half of the hockey season with a 6-5 victory over Ottawa Tuesday night at the Consol Energy Center. The six goals scored was a season high. Sidney Crosby netted the 9th hat trick of his career. Crosby scored twice in the second period and also scored the game-winning goal in the third period. The Pens had 44 shots on goal, while their goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury, struggled in his first game following the All-Star break. He allowed five goals on 23 shots. The victory was the Penguins fourth in a row. They visit Tampa Bay and Florida this weekend.
Tuesday’s victory kept the Pens tied with New Jersey for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with 33 games remaining, but also moved the Pens to within one point of four other teams in the standings. They are two points behind the second-place New York Rangers.
