The Pittsburgh Penguins lost both of their back-to-back games over the weekend, capped by a 5-2 loss last night to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Pens tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period on a Kevin Hayes power play goal. Tampa Bay would score the game-winning goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game. (Nikita Kucherov took a Penguins turnover and scored unassisted). The Lightning added two empty-net goals to end the game.
The Pens were shutout 5-0 by the Ottawa Senators Saturday night. They are now 1-5 to start the new year. ( Ten penalties were called in that game. The Pens went 0-6 on power plays ).
The Penguins complete their five-game home-stand Tuesday when they host Seattle. They begin a seven-game road trip in Buffalo Friday..
The Penguins played without Michael Bunting, who was involved in a traffic accident on his way to the arena prior to the game. He was not hurt. The Pens also played another game without Evgeni Malkin, who was put on injured reserve over the weekend.
