The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 last night in the season-opening game at PPG Paints Arena. Evgeni Malkin scored the Penguins only goal. Former Penguin Conor Sheary scored two goals to lead the Sabres. Matt Murray stopped 38 shots in net for the Penguins.
Malkin’s goal came on the power play in the second period, but overall the Pens went 1-for-5 on power plays.
It was the first time the Pens have lost to Buffalo in regulation in nearly six full years.
The Pens host the Columbus Blue Jackets at PPG Paints Arena Saturday night. Face-off is 7pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:30pm.
