The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 last night in game three of their Eastern Conference final. Carl Hagelin scored the game’s first goal in the second period. Phil Kessel, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz added third period Penguins goals. The Penguins had 48 shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Matt Murray stopped 26 Tampa Bay shots. The Pens have taken a 2-1 series lead heading into game four Friday night in Florida.
Forward Patrick Hornqvist left the ice in the third period after being struck in the hand with a puck.
Jim Rutherford of the Penguins was named a finalist for the NHL’s general manager of the year Wednesday. Brian MacLellan of Washington and Jim Nill of Dallas are the other finalists. The NHL Awards will be announced June 22nd.
